Appi Kogen Resort winter panorama with snow-covered slopes and hotels
Appi Kogen is a purpose-built ski resort in Iwate Prefecture, in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu. Sitting at an elevation of around 830 m at the base, the resort is one of the largest in the Tohoku area, offering more than 20 slopes across approximately 282 hectares of skiable terrain with 43 km of groomed and ungroomed runs.
The resort is part of a fully integrated complex operated by IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) and ANA, featuring slope-side hotels, multiple restaurants, an onsen (hot spring bath), and a wide range of winter and non-ski activities. Appi Kogen has earned a reputation for reliable snow conditions, uncrowded slopes and excellent facilities — particularly for families and mixed-ability groups.
The ski season typically runs from late November or early December through to early April, with peak conditions from late December to March.

Before You Go
The currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen (¥ JPY). While credit cards are increasingly accepted, Japan remains a cash-heavy society. ATMs at convenience stores (7-Eleven, Lawson) and post offices accept international cards. Carry sufficient cash for smaller restaurants and local shops.
Tipping is not customary in Japan and can even be considered rude. Service charges are included in hotel and restaurant bills.
Japanese is the primary language. English is limited outside major cities, though resort staff at Appi Kogen generally have some English ability. Useful phrases:
Japan uses Type A (two flat pins) plugs at 100V, 50/60 Hz. Australian plugs will not fit — bring a universal travel adapter. Most modern devices (phone chargers, laptops) handle 100V without a converter.
Australian passport holders may enter Japan visa-free for stays of up to 90 days for tourism purposes. Always verify current entry requirements before travel. Visit the Australian Government Smartraveller Japan page for the latest travel advice.
Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended. Ensure your policy covers skiing, snowboarding and any other winter sports activities. The Australian Government's Smartraveller website provides advice on choosing appropriate cover.
Japan has excellent healthcare facilities. As of October 2026, Smartraveller advises Australians to exercise normal safety precautions in Japan. Carry your passport at all times (required by law for foreign nationals). Check medication restrictions before departure — some common Australian medications may be restricted in Japan.
The resort hotels offer free Wi-Fi. For mobile data on the go, consider renting a pocket Wi-Fi device or purchasing a prepaid SIM card at the airport on arrival.
